Eating Disorder Therapy in St. Louis
Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating
Eating disorders involve extreme disturbances in a person’s relationship with food, weight, body image, and/or exercise. These disorders can take an enormous toll on someone’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and they often have an impact that reverberates throughout the individual’s life and relationships. Disordered eating can encompass many of the same behaviors seen in diagnosable eating disorders—restricting, bingeing, purging, and compulsive exercise; however, they are not yet as severe or encompassing as a full-blown eating disorder. Disordered eating behaviors can develop into eating disorders when left unaddressed.
These disorders require the care of a team of professionals, including a therapist, dietitian, psychiatrist, and physician. At Greenway Therapy, we assist clients to develop their care team, as we recognize the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach for such complex and life-threatening disorders.
Recovery is Possible
Although many who experience eating disorders may, at times, feel consumed with their behaviors and trapped in a rigid mindset related to food, weight, and body, recovery and freedom from the eating disorder is possible. Greenway’s approach to eating disorder recovery focuses on helping clients develop new skills to use instead of harmful behaviors with food or exercise, while also facilitating client awareness and healing related to underlying emotional causes. We help clients build upon their strengths and resources to find hope and meaning for life in recovery.
