It has been historically difficult for our LGBTQIA+ community to have access to quality and ethical healthcare. In order to promote equity & inclusion for our clients in the community, we hire and support staff who are a part of the community themselves. We recognize and encourage using first-hand knowledge and experience with evidence-based practices to provide our LGBTQIA+ clients with the services they have long deserved.

The Spectrum of Sexuality, Gender Identity, and Expression
People are fluid beings who have the validity and dignity to be authentic and grow over time. Sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression are on a spectrum like most things in our world. There is a natural collection of people on this spectrum that don’t fit the ‘traditional norms’ of society. It is important to recognize and validate this, especially in the mental health field. Many times people develop symptoms of mental illness because of the social constructs of what is “expected” or that binary and traditional views are the “only” way to see and value the world. This is not the case and we are patient in our approach to how the world affects our clients: affirming clients that they are valued and appreciated members of society who have purpose and meaning is the goal while providing therapeutic modalities.
A lot of theory and research has yet to touch on how they impact our community even though we are disproportionately affected by many negative outcomes in functioning. It is so important to have a place for mental health safety and professionals who can not only tolerate someone in this community but affirm and truly accept who they are while providing care that can be life-changing. Our LGBTQIA+ community is disproportionately affected by discrimination, homelessness, mental illness, inter-partner violence, chronic health concerns, hate crimes; especially our trans women of color.
It is not going to be one or two people who are able to improve care and services for our community, it will take all of us to improve our culture and form relationships of trust and healthy support. Many times all types of people are confused or feel frustrated when they are incorrect or uncomfortable about making a mistake with our community. It isn’t on the shoulders of every LGBTQIA+ person to educate and inform people of how to be more inclusive, and here we take this advocacy seriously in our work. Whether it is a family member who is struggling to adapt to your coming out process, you are questioning your own sexuality or gender, or struggling to understand the community in general, we are here to help you in this journey and give a warm invitation to “failing forward” in learning together. We are imperfect people on a mission to make life a better place for all people, especially our LGBTQIA+ folx.
