What Is Couples Therapy and Who Is It For?

Couples therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed to help two people in a committed relationship gain insight into their dynamic, resolve conflict, and improve their overall satisfaction with each other. It isn’t only for couples on the brink of separation. Many partners seek marriage counseling or relationship therapy early on to strengthen their communication, deepen intimacy, or navigate major life transitions. Whether you’re dating, engaged, married, or in a long-term partnership, couples counseling can help you build a more resilient bond.

Evidence-Based Approaches We Use: Gottman Method, EFT, and CBT

Our therapists specialize in evidence-based methods that have been rigorously studied and shown to produce real results. The Gottman Method focuses on building friendship, managing conflict constructively, and creating shared meaning within a relationship. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) helps couples identify negative interaction patterns and replace them with secure, emotionally connected responses. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) addresses the thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to relationship distress. As the APA couples therapy guide emphasizes, selecting an approach grounded in research is one of the most important factors in achieving positive outcomes. Our team draws from all three of these modalities to create a treatment plan that fits your specific needs.

Common Relationship Challenges We Help Couples Overcome

Every couple faces their own set of struggles. Some of the most common relationship issues we work with include:

• Breakdowns in communication and feeling unheard
• Infidelity, betrayal, and rebuilding trust
• Intimacy concerns and emotional disconnection
• Recurring arguments that never seem to resolve
• Parenting disagreements and blended family dynamics
• Life transitions such as relocation, career changes, or retirement
• Conflict resolution difficulties that escalate quickly

When to Consider Seeking Couples Therapy

If you find yourselves having the same argument on repeat, if conversations feel more like negotiations than connection, or if you’ve started to feel more like roommates than partners, those are signs it may be time to seek support. You don’t need to wait for a crisis. In fact, couples who begin therapy earlier often see faster and more lasting progress.

Starting couples therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you’re unsure what the process involves. In this short video, Greenway Therapy founder Kristen Neal explains how couples therapy helps partners improve communication, work through conflict, and strengthen their relationship in a supportive, judgment-free environment. Whether you’re facing ongoing disagreements, rebuilding trust, or simply want to reconnect, this overview will help you understand what to expect from your first session and how therapy can help you move forward together.

Key Takeaways

• Couples therapy is designed to help both partners feel heard and understood.
• Therapy focuses on improving communication and breaking unhealthy relationship patterns.
• Every relationship is unique, so treatment is tailored to your goals and circumstances.
• Seeking help early can prevent small issues from becoming long-term problems.
• Greenway Therapy provides a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment for couples throughout Clayton and the St. Louis area.

Your First Session: What to Expect

Your first therapy session is all about understanding your relationship’s unique story. Your therapist will ask both partners about your history, current concerns, and goals. This is a collaborative conversation designed to help everyone feel heard and to lay the groundwork for meaningful change. There is no pressure to have all the answers right away. This initial meeting is simply the beginning of an open, honest dialogue.

Collaborative Treatment Planning Tailored to Your Relationship

After the initial session, your therapist will work with both of you to develop a treatment plan that reflects your specific goals. Whether you’re focused on rebuilding trust after infidelity, improving day-to-day communication, or reigniting intimacy, every step of the process is designed around your relationship’s needs. This isn’t cookie-cutter therapy. It’s a partnership between you, your partner, and your therapist.

Ongoing Sessions and Tracking Progress Together

Progress in couples therapy isn’t always linear, but it is measurable. Throughout your therapy sessions, your therapist will check in on your goals, adjust techniques as needed, and celebrate the wins along the way. Many couples begin to notice shifts in their communication and emotional connection within the first few sessions.

In-Person and Telehealth Couples Therapy Options

We offer in-person therapy at our Clayton location for couples who prefer face-to-face sessions. We also provide online therapy sessions that are available to anyone, regardless of location. This flexibility makes it easier for busy couples to prioritize their mental health without the added stress of scheduling conflicts or long commutes.

Improve Communication and Rebuild Emotional Connection

One of the most transformative outcomes of couples therapy is learning to communicate in a way that actually reaches your partner. Through techniques rooted in the Gottman Method and emotionally focused therapy, couples learn to express needs clearly, listen with empathy, and respond with care rather than defensiveness.

Resolve Recurring Conflicts with Proven Therapeutic Methods

If the same arguments keep surfacing, it’s often because the underlying emotions driving them haven’t been addressed. Evidence-based conflict resolution strategies help couples get to the root of disagreements and develop healthier ways to navigate differences.

Develop Healthier Relationship Patterns That Last

Couples therapy isn’t just about putting out fires. It’s about building patterns of interaction that sustain your relationship long after therapy ends. The skills you learn in session become tools you carry into everyday life.

Non-Judgmental Support from Experienced Relationship Therapists

Our therapists understand that vulnerability is at the heart of meaningful change. We create a space where both partners feel safe to be honest, even about the difficult things. Therapy should feel less intimidating and more like a conversation with someone who genuinely wants to help.

Our Diverse Team of Seasoned Relationship Professionals

Our clinical staff includes Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselors (PLPCs), and Intern Counselors, each bringing diverse specialties and therapeutic perspectives. This range of experience means we can serve couples at every stage of their relationship journey.

How We Match You with the Right Therapist

Finding the right therapeutic match matters. When you reach out, we take the time to understand your situation and connect you with a therapist whose expertise and style align with your needs. A good fit between therapist and couple is one of the strongest predictors of a successful outcome.

A Welcoming, Approachable Environment for Every Couple

We believe therapy should be accessible and welcoming for everyone. Whether this is your first experience with psychotherapy or you’ve been in individual therapy before, our team meets you where you are with warmth, respect, and zero judgment.

Session Rates and What to Expect

Greenway Therapy is a self-pay practice, which means you pay for sessions directly at the time of service. This model allows us to focus entirely on your care without the limitations that insurance companies sometimes place on treatment duration or methods.

Insurance Coverage and Out-of-Network Benefits

Although we do not bill insurance companies directly, at your request, your therapist will provide you with a statement called a super-bill that you can then submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please be aware that submitting an invoice for reimbursement carries a certain amount of risk, as we cannot control how your information is used once submitted. Not all therapeutic issues are reimbursable, and it is your responsibility to verify the specifics of your coverage. Contact your insurance provider to find out if they will reimburse you directly for the out-of-network services you are seeking.
